Today's post are some more test shots. This time my inspiration came from Giovan Battista. i also could not resist shooting the mushrooms close up, they are such a great subject.

Farm Box 1

Today's shoot is the Farm Box we are getting weekly from my son's school. Delicious local organic vegetables. Again, shot in the old world still life style of which I am so fond. Hope you like!!

White Asparagus via the 18th Century

Another image for my dutch masters series. This time its asparagus. This is photographed in my studio using a Sinar P3 camera with a Sinar back. The lighting is created by one broncolor BoxLite and lots of fill. I then do some post production in Lightroom. I am loving the control and I can get with the BoxLite and a little tweaking in Lightroom really give it that painterly effect.

Once again, I am putting my Broncolors though the paces. A fast flash duration helped give this shot the gravity defying look. A bit of a mess in the studio today, but I did learn to not leave jello in a pool of warm water for too long...

I just learned I am going to have a show at 18 Reasons gallery in San Francisco! The reception will be on Friday August 5. More on that later.

Liquids

Lately I have been interested in using my Broncolor packs to the best of their ability. They have a very short flash duration when dialed in to the proper setting. After seeing Rango this weekend I was inspired to shoot even more pours liquids and splashes.

Working in close quarters on these small sets, while challenging, it's possible to do these shots by myself...

So, I set up my Nikon in continuous mode (up to 9 FPS), set my Broncolor flash units for the fastest possible flash duration at the power I need to use to get the depth of field I want. Set the lighting.. and start throwing things around, to make the splashes.

It can get a little messy, but pretty fun!

Many times in the middle of a shoot someone will ask me: "So what do you really like to shoot?"

I truly enjoy all my shoots. There is always a certain challenge or issue to deal with, be it technical or creative. And that's the fun. Sculpting light and creating. Always looking for the dramatic.

I am passionate about photography, food photography, yes, but all photography in general. I see a cool image and I think.. ooo, I can do that, I should do that, how do I translate it into my speciality of food photography?

I like to look at the world in different ways. I rarely get to the studio by the same path day after day. And photographically, I like shooting in different ways as well.. Natural light, flash, bright and graphic, warm and still life, people, location.. you name it.

I think its important to explore these various styles of shooting. It keeps my work fresh and allows me and the people that work with me to try different things...

This week I took a long drive though my homeland of Indiana. It was drizzling and beautiful. I rarely get the opportunity to just drive without a real destination in mind. The only problem was my GPS kept putting my back on Dixie Highway US 31.

I met the owner o Vice Chocolates at the Temescal farmers market. Delicious chocolates (try the rasgasm.) She allowed me to come and photograph her and her chocolate making process at her factory in Oakland. Thanks Ili!
